Mark Twain was a Kook!

Mark Twain observed native surfers during his 19th century travels to Hawaii, and in attempting the sport himself became America's first kook
In other words, a wannabe surfer who is inexperienced, irresponsible, or both. The quintessential American author was “roughing it” thru the Hawaiian Islands in the 1860’s when he spotted some locals enjoying their favorite pastime. Twain was instantly smitten with this incredible act. He borrowed a board, paddled into a breaker, and promptly wiped out. He ingested a head full of salt water and struggled back up the beach, never to ride another wave. “None but the natives,” he later wrote, “ever master the art of surf-bathing thoroughly.” Twain was not only a kook, he was dead wrong.

Anyone Can Surf

So claims Jason Borte, a professional champion, writer of nine-time world champion Kelly Slater’s bio Pipe Dreams: A Surfer’s Journey, and founder of The Surf School. In Borte’s new book, ($19.95, Surfers i Publishing), The Kook’s Guide to Surfing, he explains everything there is to know about riding waves. From preparation, to learning the basics, etiquette, waves, boards, maneuvers, competition, and much more, he delves into all of the fundamentals, constantly keeping the emphasis where it belongs, on “fun”. The adventure is humorous, entertaining, and chock full of the sort of information one could only obtain through decades in the water.
